The Process
Proton's Project Assurance processes offer much more than a simple diagnostic mechanism. Unlike an audit, Project Assurance has a constructive focus on achieving project success rather than simply identifying problems. Used as a navigation aid, Project Assurance can be used to accurately plot how a project is positioned at any point in its lifecycle, and determine how well aligned it is with its original goals. If a project is running well, Project Assurance will help identify and capitalise on the project’s strengths and ensure that the right controls are in place to avoid problems occurring in the future. If a project is off-track, Project Assurance will determine how far off track it is, identify what has taken it off track, and define a restoration program to put it back on course to achieve its outcomes. If a project is considered to be beyond saving, Project Assurance will help identify the opportunities for full or partial recovery (or salvage) and will determine alternative courses of action for the organisation. Project Assurance achieves the greatest benefit for an organisation when conducted at or near the completion of significant phases of a project, ensuring the next phase is setup for success.
The People
Project Assurance works best in the hands of experienced project professionals with the maturity and interpretive skill that only many years of project experience can provide. In the hands of a project novice, any review process will be limited to collecting and assimilating information about a project, producing a survey, not a review. A skilled reviewer has the capacity to interpret what is learned about a project, analyse its meaning, and develop a true understanding of a project's condition. From this platform an effective support or action plan can be developed. Proton reviews are conducted by at least two experienced project review professionals, and led by a Level 6 project manager with at least 15 years of relevant project management experience.
Engagement Model
Best results are achieved when Project Assurance is accepted as a positive and necessary form of quality management, not imposed on a project as a punitive exercise. Proton's Assurance model is designed to achieve acceptance by building and maintaining trust with the project team, and producing results that help the project team achieve the outcome they need.
